Reindeer blues

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” — most people do not realize this cute little song is actually a tragic tale of abuse. The lyrics of the song tell it all.

All the other reindeer laughed at Rudolph and called him names and would not let him play any of the reindeer games.

I would have to say this amounts to a case of Rudolph being bullied and discriminated against because of his physical features.

All of this went on right under Santa’s nose and would have continued had the weather have been fair instead of foggy one fateful Christmas Eve.

Suddenly, Rudolph is a hero and all the other reindeer loved him — what a joke — they were just doing this to please Santa Claus.

I’ll bet they still talked about Rudy behind his back.

The story ends there, but I wonder how Rudolph was able to handle his sudden celebrity status. We see lots of people who become stars only to fall because they could not deal with being famous.

Maybe “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” should be sung as a blues song.

Dusty Connor,
