Stand up for truth
After the fall of the Soviet Union, the hellish life in North Korea and the coming collapse of the EU, I am still amazed by the idiotic letters wanting redistribution.
One of the left’s most popular figures, Vladimir Lenin, also decreed an abolition of private and business property, and the redistribution of wealth.
All tyrants stated the same because that is the essential step in gaining control of the people.
The reason the Great Depression lasted for 14 years is because FDR had taxes at 91 percent and stacked the courts and punished working citizens, like in the case of Wickard v. Filburn 1942.
JFK reduced the top rate from 91 percent to 70 percent. This allowed one of the longest economic expansions in American history. President Reagan decreased taxes from 70 percent to 28 percent, which resulted in greater economic growth.
But we still see letters like the one written by Bob Michaelsen [DRC, Dec. 19].
Millions of people flee nefarious dynasties and come to the USA to have the freedom to direct their own lives. Thank God for the Founding Fathers.
Taking personal possessions from working folks and giving it to a debauched government is nothing less than communism. We are not put on this earth to serve a decadent regime.
The truth is there are plenty of resources and jobs; if Big Brother gets out of the way.
If good folks do not stand up for the truth, then saboteurs will debilitate our country.
Popular culture: Hollywood, TV, the mainstream media, even the news media, but others, too, including leftist politicians and many in the educational establishment, encourage Americans to reject traditional values, to become envious, self-indulgent, selfish, to think: “What’s in it for me?”
These molders of public opinion turn President Kennedy’s words on their head, telling Americans: “Ask not what you can do for your country, ask what your country can do for you.”
They also encourage magical thinking: “As individuals and a nation we can continue spending lots more than we take in. We can even increase spending. There will never be consequences. The bill will never come due.”
This is the irrational bubble inhabited by leftists, their elitist allies, their clients, including crony capitalists, and those under their influence, together now apparently a voting majority.
Eventually reality will burst that bubble, though, and there will be lots of pain.
All conservatives can do now is work to delay that pain and limit the damage as much as possible.
As for the Republican Party, it can’t survive as leftist lite. It can’t out-promise leftists. It must represent a principled conservative alternative.
If voters reject that alternative, so be it, but there must be an alternative available to voters.
It’s better for conservatives to go down fighting for reason, rule of law, fiscal and personal responsibility, integrity, service, and other traditional values. Better that than joining leftists in turning them into their opposites and thereby destroying our country.
The D.C. politicians need not worry about blame for the federal fiscal cliff. Just blame George.
George Washington, that is, for if he had sent his troops home for Christmas, then visited Mount Vernon, the queen would be telling us what to do now. But he didn’t. He stayed in there like a true patriot should.
