Tired old pitch

The government is coming to take your guns and if that makes you shake in your BVDS; if it makes you want to rush out and buy another gun; the NRA and the gun manufacturers of America know how to push your buttons.

I’ve heard that tired old pitch for 50 years, and you know nobody from the government has knocked on my door and said “gimme.”

Be honest: has President Obama said or even suggested he wants your guns? No, he hasn’t, but the NRA has tried to twist a stand against assault rifles and multi-bullet gun clips into “the government is coming to get your guns.’’

The NRA is supported and takes its marching orders from the gun manufacturers of America and they could care less what happens to and with their guns once they leave the manufacturing plant and are sold in stores.

They don’t care if their guns kill fathers, mothers, babies or you as long as the cash keeps rolling in. They don’t care if their guns eventually make their way into the hands of criminals.

When is the last time you had to pull a gun in self-defense? When is the last time you had to repel a mob with an assault rifle?

The weapon manufacturers want you to fear that you will have to in a hypothetical future. Why? That fear translates into gun sales. Gun sales mean more cash and that is the only goal and purpose they have.

Stop power grab

Our founders knew history and understood human nature.

James Madison wrote, “If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself.”

We are all tempted to take advantage of others, and we too often succumb to that temptation. This condition is made worse when there is a power relationship involved. As Lord Acton stated, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

The primary purpose of government is to protect citizens against external and internal predators. It must therefore have more power than potential predators. But since government is administered by human beings also subject to the temptation to abuse, and since they exercise power over us, which involves additional temptation, government must never be allowed more power than what is needed to fulfill that purpose.

Otherwise government itself may become the worst predator of all, as history shows. Government abuse caused the death of more than 100 million people in the 20th century alone, as well as the suffering of many millions more.

Let’s not become such statistics ourselves. Let’s vigorously guard our innate and inalienable human rights, including those listed in the Constitution. Let’s stop arbitrary increases in government control and power to abuse.

Clueless liberals

The recent letter by Jim Stodola [DRC, Jan. 26] is a perfect example of the ignorance and hypocrisy of liberals. If he had taken just a few minutes to examine what the liberals have put forward as banned assault weapons, he would find that his standard pistol clip and his shotgun would most probably be classified as an assault weapon.

Just adding a pistol grip to his shotgun would make it one, even if the magazine capacity meets their extremist rule. But like most liberals, he would never want facts or any type of intelligence to get in the way their ranting.

He thought he was funny when he obviously wished that gun owners would use their weapons on themselves or family. Now that is the compassionate nonviolent liberal attitude we see regularly from the leftist.

Maybe someone should use the ObamaCare rule and have his doctor report to the government that he has owned guns.

It is not the gun that kills someone; it is the person using it. Because of the liberal assault on institutionalizing the mentally ill, these people are roaming loose in the country without proper treatment. So once again liberals have no clue of the tragedy that their actions cause.

They love “choice” until it is a right to protect people from the union thugs who demand they join or lose their job.

Lord forbid that a woman contemplating aborting her child actually get to see and understand exactly what she is about to kill.

Liberals, always clueless.

Mental exams

First, I think our president, Obama, the vice president, and his top staff should have been considered for a mental exam prior to taking office.

As Obama said, “anyone trying to hide something must have something in his background to hide.”

The news now coming from this president is “the military leaders” must take a litmus exam to see if they will order to fire on individuals, U.S. citizens, and if not, they will be relieved of their commands.

My concern with this is Homeland Security has ordered loads of assault rifles and loads of hollow-point ammunition.

Who are these weapons to be used against?

The last report is that the head of Central Command, Marine Gen. Mattis, refused to give an answer to his litmus questions, and is being relieved of his command in March.

I am a retired military officer and the only U.S. citizen I would consider firing on would be one breaking into my home, and I would fire on him under the Second Amendment of our Constitution.

Just think, we have almost four more years of this — what vote did you put in the election box?
