Right-wing wrongs

According to the FBI and Scotland Yard, Rocky Haire’s argument [DRC, Feb. 5] that the U.S., with 300 million guns, has a lower violent crime rate than the U.K., is false.

The statistics of this false claim are from a 2009 article in the Daily Mail, an English tabloid that is the British version of National Enquirer.

There are four crimes classified as “violent” in U.S. crime statistics: murder/non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault. In the U.K., virtually every crime is considered “violent.”

As compiled by the FBI, the U.S. has more burglaries, rapes and murders than the U.K. Moreover, the FBI reports that while robbery rates were similar between the countries, burglary rates were far higher in the U.S. and Americans are four time more likely to be murdered.

The U.S. had five murdered per 100,000; the UK had 1.49 per 100,000.

Tillman Uland [DRC, Feb. 12] attacks police for enforcing seat-belt laws. The policeman’s motto is, “To protect and serve.”

By enforcing this law, policemen are protecting people who are too stupid to protect themselves.

Safety belts are the most effective means of reducing fatalities and serious injuries.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 15,000 lives are saved each year in the United States because drivers and their passengers were wearing seat belts when they were in accidents.

Yet, only 68 percent of Americans wear safety belts. By contrast, Germany stands at 95 percent.

Is snapping on his seat belt too much trouble for Uland to save 15,000 lives?
