Re-election change

A compromise gun control bill that included a comprehensive package expanding background checks for gun purchases, increasing penalties against gun trafficking and investing in school safety fell short in the Senate. All but four Republicans and a handful of conservative Democrats voted their careers rather than their conscience unless, of course, their conscience is purely egocentric. This legislation would not have violated any law-abiding citizen’s Second Amendment rights.

This means along with all the other gutless senators who voted to prevent measures that would have made it tougher for criminals, gang members and mentally unstable individuals to purchase a firearm, Senators Cornyn and Cruz sided with the gun industry and its handmaiden, the NRA, rather than with their constituents. They kowtowed to a vocal minority rather than do the right thing.

Polls show 90 percent of Americans favored these extended background checks. Despite being a pro-gun state, most Texans do favor sensible gun-control measures, which include not only background checks on all purchases but a ban on some assault weapons, as well.

Clearly, the voice of gun lobbyists means more to Cruz and Cornyn than those who actually elected them to office. Perhaps we can change that when they run for re-election.
