Plant something

Some folks are still having trouble with this “Heaven on Earth” thing. They see that it’s not a handful of aces every day, that most days it’s just a dead armadillo on the highway. I’m not telling you that you have to suffer down here so you can go to the land with no dead armadillos later. I’m asking you how old you are: 40, 50, 60, 70?

While you yearn for the land with no dead armadillos, you have been missing out for 40, 50, 60, 70 years on that other heaven … down here. Look out your front door every morning at God’s beautiful trees, flowers and shrubs. And, well if you don’t see any … plant some. I’ve been planting trees, flowers and shrubs for many decades.

And I’ve been feeding the birds that long. My Dad could hold his hand into the air and have a purple martin land on his hand. I never had that luck but I did have a hummingbird flutter on my head. (no wisecracks guys).

While you’re waiting for that other heaven, make this a better heaven down here. Make it better for yourself by all means, but try to make it better for mankind. And if you can’t open a factory to employ 500 of your fellow man, then plant some trees.

Jim Stodola,
Denton
