Great compliment

Larry Beck’s claim that I am exposing myself to ridicule [DRC, July 15] is a great compliment. Beck has regularly ridiculed those who are much more accomplished, knowledgeable and capable than I, for whom I have great respect and admiration.

Being included with these patriots is an honor.

Enforcement of existing gun laws first will impede access of guns to criminals. However, the Department of Justice still does not prosecute those who submit fraudulent background check applications, which is a felony punishable by 10 years in prison.

Vice President Joe Biden heads Obama’s firearms task force. His statement that, “We don’t have time to prosecute everybody who lies on background checks,” demonstrates their lack of commitment in keeping guns from criminals.

Two-thirds of these 72,659 denials (with only 44 prosecuted) in 2010 were for felony indictments or convictions and denying being a fugitive.

Beck’s claim that 40 percent of gun sales are at gun shows uses stale data from a 1997 National Institute of Justice report, based on a telephone survey of 251 people who bought firearms in 1993 and 1994. This was prior to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System being in effect.

Beck’s assertion that Obama has no intention of signing the U.N. arms treaty is refuted by the 130 congressmen who prior to June 3, labeled the treaty “deeply flawed” while urging Obama not to sign it after John Kerry had confirmed U.S. commitment. Attorney General Abbott’s letter to Obama on April 2 states that the treaty’s vague language could restrict Second Amendment rights.
