Road to recovery

I’m not one to raise my voice for causes very often; however, as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, mental health consumers and providers join voices to raise awareness for mental health issues and recovery during this Recovery Month (September), I felt compelled to do so.

Recovery Month was founded on the principles that behavioral health is essential to a person’s overall health, prevention works, treatment is effective and people recover. As a longtime sufferer — now in recovery — from depression, I believe in those ideas fully.

With the help of the staff at Denton County MHMR, I received treatment that allowed me to proceed on a path to recovery. Despite a few bumps in the road, I have been able to complete a college degree in health information technology and work in the field for a while.

I’m employed as a peer support specialist at the Denton County MHMR. This is a new position, based on the idea that by sharing my lived experience recovering from depression, I and other peer specialists can help people suffering from mental illness better navigate their own road to recovery.

If you are in crisis, please call Denton County MHMR’s crisis line at 1-800-762-0157.

Recovery is possible.
