Old saying comes to mind

I quote [Jack Cox’s letter, DRC, Nov. 15]: “Your desire to believe in the mendacious miscreants Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and others in the Communist Party. ...”

Again I quote in reference to Mr. Dana’s wording: “This cynical attempt to disparage others does you no good.”

Mr. Cox, does the old saying, “Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black,” come to your mind at all?

Jim Clark,

Denton

Take heed

I am concerned about the increase of gun violence in our country — 87 people are killed every day and 609 are killed every week. More people are killed by guns than are killed on our highways.

One of the questions I ask is, “Does having a gun in your home protect you or does it put you and your family at risk?”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention set out to answer that question scientifically and what the organization found was that having a gun did not protect you, but it increased the risk by 300 percent.

And the risk that someone in your home would die from suicide with a gun — and I need to remind us that two-thirds of all gun deaths are suicides — went up by 500 percent.

These research findings are extraordinary. And these research findings have been replicated again and again in many studies.

Gun violence is the second-leading cause of death among children and teens ages 1 through 19 and is the No. 1 cause of death among black children and teens.

This is a public health threat and must be attacked. All you who read this, please take heed.

Jack Thomson,

Denton
