Give me a break

It’s taken me a few days to “digest” the Denton school district grading policy change in a recent paper. As a parent and teacher, I worked hard to try to look at the changes from all sides. The part about all the input made it sound as if DISD studied the situation and had buy-in from “450 teachers.”

I have no doubt that the powers that be believe this is a wonderful, groundbreaking system that is going to help the students in Denton educationally leap ahead of other districts in Texas.

Now, fast forward to Johnnie or Susie after their first semester in college: “What do you mean that you aren’t going to accept all of these late papers? I’ve clearly shown that I’ve made improvements.”

Or their first review on their new job: “What do you mean I’m fired for missing the deadline? I have concrete proof right here that my late work is superior to what I attempted the first time.”

Give me a break. School is about more than learning material. It’s about responsibility and a work ethic.

I, for one, am going to start a savings account to help my future grandchildren get into a private school where they still expect students to do their work, meet deadlines and get it right the first time.
