The Denton Record-Chronicle welcomes letters to the editor pertaining to the May 27 primary runoff elections. Letters must follow all regular submission rules. Primary runoff election letters must be received in this office by 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 15; none will be published after Tuesday, May 20.
Grading policy questions
With respect for the good intentions of the Denton school district, curriculum director Vicky Christenson and board President Charles Stafford, I have questions regarding their new grading policy.
What is the rational for not entering missing/never-turned-in assignments as a zero or for not reducing grades for work turned in past their deadline? Will students pass if they “... have made improvements” and “tried hard” but still did not pass the exam or their “project” was incomplete and weeks late? Is two months of late assignments acceptable to turn in the last week of the semester?
Please share with us your rubric for objectively quantifying and assigning grades for “effort made” and “improvement.” How, specifically, do you plan to measure “evidence that no actual learning took place?” The semester exam?
Will teachers be given an additional planning period to individually tutor and custom-tailor “alternative assignments” for the inevitably increasing numbers of students unwilling or unable to complete the required assignments?
And, finally, would you keep/promote a new employee with significant attendance issues, who frequently missed deadlines for providing you with material you needed for school board presentations, whose work was incomplete, factually inaccurate and misspelled and who repeatedly asked for “alternative” ways to satisfy his/her professional responsibilities to DISD? And still receive their DISD paycheck and benefits package?
I hope not.
