Letters to the editor, December 12

Taxing situation

If your family income is less than $250,000 per year, look on your calendar at the date Jan. 1, 2013. It doesn’t matter if you are a Democrat or Republican, your taxes are going up.

It won’t matter if you voted for President Obama or Mitt Romney.

It won’t matter if you have been a lifetime Republican or if you have donated to the presidential campaign or made calls, wrote letters, or what you have done for that party; Jan. 1, you are going to be in the same boat as your Democrat equivalents.

You are going to take home less pay and have less to spend in the marketplace.

President Obama has begged the House and Senate to extend the Bush tax breaks for those making less than $250,000. Thus far, most of the Republicans have indicated they will not do this unless the president also allows tax breaks for the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans.

Oil companies make record profits, the medical and pharmaceutical industries thrive, the insurance companies continue to steal you blind, and the banking industry becomes ever more profitable; these are the people who are able to dodge paying higher tax rates at your expense.

They are part of the favored 2 percent of Americans.

E-mail, call or write Congressman Michael Burgess and let him know in no uncertain terms that if he blocks the president’s move to keep your taxes from going up, that he will never receive your vote again for any political office.
