Vote to create gas utility

I just concluded a six-year term as a voting director on the Denton Chamber of Commerce board, during which I also served as the chairman.

The chamber has served as the marketing component of a joint economic development partnership with the city of Denton and Denton Municipal Electric (DME) since 2003. While the emphasis of this agreement is naturally focused on attracting new major employers, we realize the equal need to retain companies already here.

Thus, I was pleased that one of my final votes on the chamber board was to endorse and advocate support for a public referendum on May 11 to create a new gas utility through Denton Municipal Electric.

Additional access to natural gas in the designated industrial area west of Interstate 35 near Denton Enterprise Airport has reached capacity. Major users have experienced curtailment during excessive cold temperatures. A pipeline owned by DME would be for industrial use only, and would not be curtailed.

Construction and improvements to industrial-zoned property help lessen the ad valorem tax burden for individual homeowners and local businesses and professionals. Major private employers translate into long-term career opportunities for Denton residents. Profitable businesses are better able to financially support charities and philanthropic causes.

Please vote yes in support of the creation of a gas utility on May 11.
