More than 1,000 young Americans, ages 13 to 24, each month get the incurable HIV infection. This virus causes AIDS.
Despite all the innovation in drugs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HIV infections are increasing among teens.
Unfortunately, more than 60 peercent of these teens do not know that they are carrying the AIDS virus. They need to get tested so they can be treated.
The CDC recommends that routine testing should start at age 13. Every family should talk honestly and openly with their teens about prevention and help them resist the pressure to do drugs and engage in risky behaviors.
The stigma associated with this disease can stop when people become educated about it.
The St. James A.M.E. Church at 1107 E. Oak St. in Denton will host an HIV/AIDS workshop and free HIV testing from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Parents are invited to come out, get the information and get tested with their teens.
