Letters to the editor, September 21

Advise us

Bill Reed [DRC, Sept. 4], congratulations on your recent trip to Africa.

You are correct that the illegal ivory trade is responsible for the deaths each year of many elephants.

I have watched shows on the National Geographic Channel concerning this business.

I had no problem with your letter until you placed blame on the Catholic Church.

According to my research, the two major consumers of ivory are the Chinese and the Japanese.

The Catholic Church does not buy ivory or employ artists to sculpt or shape ivory into religious trinkets or icons.

If you have information to refute this, please feel free to advise us and I personally will see that my future contributions to the Catholic Church do not go for that.
