Letters to the editor, March 2

Let freedom ring

Before the Civil War, some slave masters were conflicted. Slavery made their lives so much easier, but they knew slavery was immoral and not at all in keeping with the ideals of the Declaration of Independence.

There were also slave masters who were perfectly happy enslaving others.

Lincoln spoke against both kinds of slave masters when he said, “As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy.”

Most of us today agree that we wouldn’t be slaves. We’d much rather be free to make our own choices and decisions.

True conservatives also agree with Lincoln in not wanting to be masters. It’s not up to us or our elected representatives to make immorally controlling life choices and decisions for other Americans, from the major, such as what health insurance they must have, to the minor, such as what light bulbs or toilets they must have.

But morally certain leftists, like President Obama, Hillary Clinton, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, are sure they know best, and they intend to decide for us stupid peons. They’re perfectly happy with the immorality of being masters, of telling the rest of us what to do and robbing us of the freedom to make such choices and decisions for ourselves. Total leftist rule is their “idea of democracy.”

It’s sad that such controlling leftists are supported by so many Americans, who therefore, whether they realize it or not, would rather be slaves than free.
