Crisis situation

For 42 years Denton Christian Preschool has provided a head start for 3- and 4-year-old children who are at risk for failure in public school. This year we reached a crisis situation.

With great reluctance, we agreed to reduce the number of classes. For 3-year-olds, this means only two classes instead of three; our 4-year-olds will continue to have two classes enrolled.

Reducing classes is not what we want to do. The number of children needing our services continues to increase. So we are calling on you, our caring community, to help us increase our support. Here are things you can do to help:

Give a monetary gift this summer to help us increase enrollment instead of cutting.

Recruit one or more people or groups to provide $3,000 a year for a scholarship for a child.

Recruit a civic group, social group or club, Sunday school class, or group of friends to host a fundraiser. This might be a garage sale, pool party, bingo night or whatever imaginative idea you might have.

Host a coffee, tea or dessert party to give people information about Denton Christian Preschool. Our board will be glad to supply someone to talk about the school and the need in the community.

We will enroll 50 children for the 2014-15 school year. If we receive $35,000 in additional giving by Aug. 1, we will add two classes from the waiting list and serve 75 children.

Gloria V. Thomas, Denton,

president of the governing board,
