Complete text

Regarding the letter in your Oct. 26 issue about the Second Amendment, here is the complete text of this amendment: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Thirteen words are about "a well regulated Militia" and 14 are the oft-quoted words about "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms."

If anyone is misunderstanding or ignoring the Second Amendment, it seems to me to be the folks who oppose any sort of regulations, who object to universal background checks or preventing the mentally ill from owning guns, or who oppose any of the other common-sense gun laws that are being proposed.

They are choosing to pay attention to only the second half of the amendment and ignoring the first half. That is truly having "no idea what it really means."

Karen DeVinney,
