Embarrassing our state

This is an open letter to U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas:

Sen. Cornyn, a moment of Twitter silence, please. You're not only trashing your own reputation, but embarrassing our state by claiming that the Mueller investigation is only legitimate if you agree with the findings.

Why throw suspicion anywhere other than where it rests, on the shoulders of President Donald Trump? It is unfortunate but understandable that he might make crude obstruction of justice efforts.

After all, when in the history of humankind has the target of a savvy prosecutor not cried foul and tried to hamper an investigation that is steadily turning up indictments?

Sensible Americans would say that Mueller, a registered Republican, is doing a highly professional job.

It is ludicrous to hear you contributing to Trump's obstruction of justice efforts by suggesting that any political views on the part of agents who do not support Trump's constellation of ideas should be cause for Mueller's firing.

Would FBI agents who sent emails lauding neo-Nazis, white supremacists and Russian money launderers make you feel more relaxed?

Oppose tax bill

If the Republicans pass their huge tax cut and thereby cause big deficits, they will begin to "reform" (that is, cut) Medicare and Social Security to pay for this tax cut.

Anyone who doesn't believe this is not listening to what Republican congressmen (such as House Speaker Paul Ryan) are saying.

Old folks like me should be concerned. If we live long enough, we may be affected.

More importantly, however, these cuts will mean that our children and grandchildren can expect poorer health care and a lower standard of living in their retirement. And they will have to suffer so that the rich political donors can have more money.

Call your congressmen to oppose the tax cut.

Bob Michaelsen,

Policy reversal

The Trump administration ruled on Friday that animals raised for food under the "USDA Organic" label need not be treated any less cruelly than those in conventional farming.

The decision reverses years of U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, which held that the "organic" label should impose minimal ethical, health and environmental standards.

For the animals, this included adequate space, light and access to the outdoors.

Under the Trump administration, this will no longer be the case. "Organic" farm operations will be allowed to cram laying hens five to a small wire cage that tears out their feathers and to grind or suffocate millions of male chicks at birth because they don't lay eggs.

Mother pigs will spend their miserable lives in tight metal crates, as their babies are torn from them and mutilated with no anesthesia.

And dairy cows will continue to cry for their babies torn from them at birth, so we can drink their milk.

Caring consumers opting for "organic" animal products, to reduce their role in subsidizing these abuses, will now have no choice but to switch to plant-based foods, including the widely available nut- and grain-based meats, milks, cheeses and ice creams.

Abe Autry,

Figurative corner

Feminists have painted themselves into a figurative corner, or have stepped off into figuratively empty space!

Male or female sexual identity legally counts for nothing these days, except that somebody claiming to be female qualifies as special in divorce; it's an anti-male agenda.

If the ladies don't like what men are doing to them, just change gender and be male!

If you can't beat us, join us! Any woman claiming to be oppressed is provocative by appearing to be a female, because anyone can be either sex these days.

Men also could change to be women, on our own terms, of course!

I muse that some objects of current accusations may not be the gender they are presumed to be. For instance, an accused male can actually be a male-dressing transvestite transgender who is secretly claiming female and staging a false-flag exploit! How can we be sure?

With sex irrelevant to identity, perhaps the focus can now shift to being the age one claims, not some assigned figure. Or choosing our race. Battling against ageism and racism. This allows one to technically live forever, be any life form.

A further step would be treating others as whatever we presume them to be, which is already being done by the media and others.

Ladies, you are free to be NFL linebackers, while we men are free to be pregnant. It's sexist abuse to contend that we can't!

Onward through the fog!

Time of love

Christmas is a time of love and reconciliation.

To all of my political friends, political opponents and those in between: May you have a wonderful Christmas and a great 2018.

To those of you who don't celebrate Christmas: May you have a wonderful end of the year, and may you have a great 2018 as well.
