Two incumbents draw opponents

07:40 AM CST on Tuesday, March 14, 2006

By Cliff Despres / Staff Writer

Two Denton City Council members will face opponents in their re-election bids.

Bob Montgomery
Joe Mulroy

Retired university professor John Paul Eddy filed just before Monday’s deadline to challenge incumbent Bob Montgomery, and ex-Denton city employee Shelley Shay, whose job was cut by the city last year, filed to challenge incumbent Joe Mulroy.

Both are at-large seats.

Election Day is May 13.

Shay, 38, was city webmaster from 1998 to 2005 when her job was eliminated with more than 50 others in a staff reduction. She now works in a computer-related job in Plano.

Shay said she is running for council to “contribute to my community,” not because she holds any grudges or has axes to grind with the city or Mulroy.

Shay said that she has “often joked that if I won the lottery or had an abundant amount of free time,” she would run for office. “I haven’t won the lottery and don’t have an abundant amount of free time, but I’m getting older and haven’t contributed. I would like to matter.”

Mulroy, 56, a Denton business owner who ran uncontested for his seat in 2004, said he doesn’t mind having an opponent.

“We should always welcome a variety of folks into the public process. Most times, differing viewpoints can be constructive toward policy formation,” Mulroy said. “I look forward to the exchange of ideas for bettering Denton.”

Eddy, 74, is a retired professor at the University of North Texas who has been a vocal proponent for a smoking ban in all public places in Denton. He could not be reached for comment Monday evening.

Montgomery, 70, who is also retired, was first elected to his seat in 2002. He has said he wants to continue helping the city meet growth and transit demands.

Montgomery also could not be reached for comment Monday evening.
