Bike lanes may cut through downtown
A plan to add bicycle lanes and further limit on-street parking on Oak and Hickory streets through central Denton is headed to a city commission for review Monday.

The Denton County Sheriff’s Office released these video stills showing a suspect sought in the killing of a taxi driver found in Justin on Thursday. The video footage was taken from security cameras at a nearby convenience store.

Denton County sheriff’s investigators are searching for two men wanted in connection with the robbery and murder of a taxi driver, whose body was found partially burned in a field in Justin on Thursday night. According to the taxicab company’s records, the driver picked up two men near a Dallas bus station Thursday and was taking them to Wichita Falls, said Tom Reedy, Denton County sheriff’s spokesman.


Stars and stripes emerge on field of green
What started as a seed of an idea among artists has grown into an acre-sized salute to the country. Tucked in a fallow hayfield off Mustang Road in Pilot Point, a 210-by-117-foot flag — complete with stars and stripes — sits after more than a month of mowing and hours of hard work under the hot sun.

Double dose of civic service
As Denton South Rotary Club members raise more than 800 flags in honor of the Fourth of July, they are raising money to support local charity efforts. For each of the five patriotic holidays of the year — Memorial Day, Flag Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day — Denton and Corinth residents and businesses can pay a $40 yearly fee to have a flag placed outside their home, said Scott Walker, club president.

20-year-old man drowns at Ray Roberts Lake
A 20-year-old Dallas man drowned Friday afternoon while swimming in a remote part of Ray Roberts Lake near Pilot Point in Cooke County, said Jim Lundberg, a game warden with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The man was swimming with several friends about 25 yards from the shore, in an area littered with tree debris.

The employee of a shack-like fireworks store located near the Sanger city limits is making sure items such as the Texas Sky Rocket and the Fire Exporative — which he says are likely to sell out — are ready for blastoff this Fourth of July weekend.


Drive begins for animal shelter funds
A drive to raise $3.2 million for a new Denton animal shelter is quietly under way after years of planning, even as the recession throws the timing of the project’s construction into doubt. The Denton Animal Shelter Foundation has raised nearly $200,000 in pledges and gifts, mostly through one-on-one meetings with acquaintances, said Bette Sherman, chairwoman of the nonprofit foundation.

Pair sue over area election on alcohol
Two Frisco residents have sued Denton County over a local-option election in Precinct 2 conducted in May, alleging the election was invalid. Residents Al Gibson and Richard Belyan filed suit June 23 in the 158th District Court, asking not only for the election results to be thrown out, but also for the court to issue temporary and permanent injunctions.

Funds approved for dispatch system
Denton County officials hope to tune up the efficiency of the sheriff’s office and other area law enforcement entities with the purchase of a computer-aided dispatch system. County commissioners approved $1.7 million for a system provided by SunGard Public Sector on Tuesday and agreed to proceed with final negotiations with the firm.

School board member earns state designation
Denton school board member Jeanetta Smith recently earned one of the highest designations given by the Texas Association of School Boards. Smith was one of 31 Texas school board members named a Master Trustee, a designation given to graduates of Leadership TASB, a yearlong program sponsored by the association in which school board members from around the state study public school finance from its history to models in other areas and possible solutions to financing problems.

Charter commissioner goes against the flow
PILOT POINT — One city charter commission member twice went against the grain Monday, casting the lone votes against a pair of recommendations that, in his view, failed to stick up for residents. David Lewis, who also is the editor and publisher of the Pilot Point Post-Signal, said he had disagreed with the City Council the last two times it raised the city’s property tax rate. He wanted to make sure the new charter had built-in protections for taxpayers.

Madoff gets 150-year prison term for fraud
NEW YORK — A federal judge rejected Bernard Madoff’s plea for leniency Monday, sentencing the 71-year-old swindler to spend the rest of his life in prison for an “extraordinarily evil” fraud that took a staggering toll on thousands of victims. “They are trying to send a message about this type of criminal behavior,” said Bernard Weinstein, director of the Center for Economic and Development Research at the University of North Texas in Denton.

Much-debated city water tank goes up

Denton’s new water tank rises out of the trees just south of Denia Park. City officials say it will be ready for use next summer.

Construction on a city water tank whose location in a wooded area south of Denia Park was hotly debated is now visible above the surrounding trees. The $5.17 million tank won’t be completed before next summer, as initially hoped, but should be ready for use by late June or early July 2010, before peak summer demand hits, city engineer Frank Payne said. The Denton City Council approved the construction contract with Fort Worth-based Landmark Structures in January.

A local group of volunteer women builders is helping families become homeowners. Women Build, a project of Habitat for Humanity of Denton County, recently started work on a house at 612 Wilson St. in Southeast Denton. Another home, on McDonald Street, was completed earlier this year. Elisa Carrasco, family services administrator with Habitat, said Women Build had been hampered by a lack of funding. The previous Women Build house was in Sanger in 2004.


Healing for all faiths: Chaplains at hospital tend to spiritual needs
The Rev. Linda Strange performs much of her ministry work simply walking down the halls of Denton Regional Medical Center. It’s not a parish in the usual sense, but Strange and the on-call chaplains at the hospital — the Rev. Harvey Junker and Charles Forshaw — find it to be a mission field where prayers, greetings and sitting quietly with families are integral to medicine. “Denton Regional Medical Center looks at and cares for the spiritual, mental and emotional part of the patient as well as the physical,” Strange said.

A 21-year-old woman reported she was groped while swimming at a pool in her apartment complex in the 1300 block of Dallas Drive on Saturday, according to a police report.

Dream of flight nears reality

When Michael Combs was a little boy, he dreamed of flying. And he always thought he would fly — one day. When the Lake Dallas man was 50 years old with heart problems, he nearly died twice and thought he had lost that dream forever. But he lived and started seeing the world with new eyes, said his daughter, Cyndi Combs.


New group aims to help Denton Hispanic women
A new group focused on mentoring young Hispanic women is starting small — working in Denton’s schools and universities — but the founders have their eyes on a bigger prize. Maria Muniz and Tomasa Garcia say they hope that the Denton chapter of the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas will grow to promoting Hispanic women for public office in Denton.

Former UNT quarterback took broken road to jail
When the Dallas Cowboys went to training camp in Austin in the early 1990s, Damon West went, too — a high school quarterback from Port Arthur working out after practice under the tutelage of Cowboys assistant coach Norv Turner. Smart, charming and confident, West seemed to have everything going for him — in football and in life. But behind that promising veneer, West dealt with attention deficit hyperactive disorder, lingering insecurities from his parents’ separation when he was a boy, psychological scars from being sexually molested by a female babysitter, and a history of alcohol and drug abuse that began in elementary school.

Official: Passengers towed to safety after Heartland Flyer loses power
A locomotive towed 176 Amtrak train passengers into Sanger Saturday afternoon after the train reportedly lost power, according to emergency officials. Along with losing power, the train was unable to run the air conditioning, leaving the passengers on the Heartland Flyer in the heat for a little more than an hour, said Jody Gonzalez, Denton County’s emergency management coordinator.

Blotter: Police apprehend, jail sixth robbery suspect
The sixth suspect wanted in connection with three related crimes was apprehended by Denton police Saturday and taken to the city jail after he reportedly attempted to evade arrest, according to a police report. Rodney Deon Young, 17, was arrested on suspicion of organized criminal activity and evading arrest, according to information from the police department.

Shady Oaks partly open
The westbound lanes of the Shady Oaks Drive extension opened to traffic this week, but it could be months before drivers can cruise the eastbound lanes. The two westbound lanes of Shady Oaks Drive from Loop 288 to Woodrow Lane opened Thursday afternoon, offering another route west from the city’s main shopping district. The two eastbound lanes are finished but will remain closed indefinitely because the junction of Shady Oaks and Loop 288 lacks adequate traffic signals, said John Cabrales, a city spokesman.

Series of crimes leads to 5 arrests
Denton police have three men and two juveniles in custody and are looking for a sixth suspect in connection with three related crimes early Friday. Several males were involved in the attempted holdups of two people and a burglary between midnight and 1:30 a.m. Officers stopped a car and arrested all the occupants except one man who ran from the scene.

Summer sun brings out the smell of pot
The hot Texas sun helped Denton police foil an attempt to deliver 13 pounds of marijuana Thursday afternoon and arrest two men who were expecting the package. Capt. Lenn Carter said Friday a commercial mail carrier received a tip that a large amount of marijuana was being shipped to an Aubrey home for repackaging and resale in Denton. The company contacted Denton narcotics officers.

Radio group to demonstrate capabilities
Members of the Denton County Amateur Radio Association will be demonstrating their emergency capabilities this weekend, and area residents are invited to take a close look and lend an ear. The local group will be participating in Field Day, an annual event that caps off Amateur Radio Week, sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, the national association for amateur radio.

TCEQ approves $12,300 fine for store
State environmental regulators on Friday approved a $12,300 fine against a Denton convenience store for violations related to its gasoline storage tanks. Golden Stop, a Shell station at 1025 Dallas Drive, was fined for six violations discovered during a routine investigation last year, including failing to monitor the tanks for leaks each month and to maintain devices that prevent spills.

Raider Express plans tribute tournament
On Sunday, Raider Express will have a fundraising softball tournament as a tribute to Andrew Neil Mattison, an employee who died suddenly on Tuesday.  The tournament is slated to start at 8 a.m. at the North Hills Park Complex in North Richland Hills at North Tarrant Parkway and Davis Boulevard.
