Economic expert Bernard 'Bud' Weinstein leaving University of North Texas for SMU
12:00 AM CDT on Thursday, August 27, 2009
Bernard "Bud" Weinstein, longtime director of the Center for Economic Development and Research at the University of North Texas, will retire from that post Monday and become associate director of the Maguire Energy Institute at Southern Methodist University.
Terry L. Clower, associate director of the UNT center now headed by Weinstein, will succeed him.
"Bud's research experience in renewable energy and experience in administering a policy research center is a perfect complement to the activities in the Maguire Energy Institute," said Bruce Bullock, director of the institute.
"He will engage the institute and the university in the ongoing national energy debate."
Because of Weinstein's experience as a researcher and consultant with national governments and private firms engaged in international commerce, he will also work with SMU's O'Neil Center for Global Markets and Freedom.
Weinstein recently completed an assessment of the costs and benefits of the North American Free Trade Agreement. He has participated in economic development projects in China, India, Thailand and Mexico.
Since 1975, Weinstein has focused on business and economic development in North Texas and the Southwest.
In his new role, he will continue to monitor the economy and provide his perspective in speeches and to media outlets.
"Dean Al Niemi has assembled an incredibly productive faculty, and the various institutes and centers within the school afford students and faculty the opportunity to engage in real-world research and policy analysis," Weinstein said.
Weinstein has a bachelor's degree in public administration from Dartmouth College and a doctorate in economics from Columbia University.
In announcing Clower's appointment, Thomas Evenson, dean of the College of Public Affairs and Community Service at UNT, said: "Terry has been an integral part of the center's success for 17 years, and his acceptance of the director's position ensures a seamless transition."
Clower joined the center in 1992 and has served as project manager, staff researcher and statistical analyst on projects involving labor relations, economic and community development, public utilities and transportation.
He leads the center's transportation research efforts and has helped the center develop an international reputation for its research on the impact of transit systems and transit-oriented development.
Clower is also an associate professor of applied economics.
