Tech review: Logitech adapter helps program PS3's to remotes harmoniously
07:24 AM CDT on Friday, June 5, 2009
The PlayStation 3 is still, almost three years after its release, one of the best DVD and Blu-ray movie players on the market.
But using the console to watch a movie can be a pain if you want to program the PS3 into your universal remote.
Thankfully, Logitech's new Harmony Adapter ($59) for the PS3 finally solves the problem.
The adapter accepts the standard IR wireless signal used by Logitech's popular line of universal remotes and translates it into the Bluetooth wireless signal that the PS3 recognizes.
The catch is that the adapter only works with Logitech's Harmony line of universal remotes.
Other than that, the system is pretty straightforward.
I tested the adapter using Logitech's excellent Harmony One remote.
First you have to program your Harmony universal remote with the PS3's buttons.
You plug the remote into your PC or Mac with a USB cable, install the CD and walk through the setup menu to add PS3 functionality.
Then you plug the adapter into a power outlet and manually turn on your PS3 and scan for the adapter's Bluetooth signal.
Once the remote is programmed and the adapter is mated to your console, you're done.
I was able to use the remote to turn my console on and off, eject a disc and watch a movie (with pause, rewind, fast forward, etc.), and there was never a moment of lag.
It was as seamless as using Sony's standalone PS3 Bluetooth remote.
It is unfortunate that you have to plug the adapter into a power outlet, but the advantage is that you can turn on the console remotely.
And the adapter is only about the size of a pack of cigarettes, so it's pretty easy to conceal on a shelf or beneath your TV.
But while the adapter is flawless from a technical perspective, it might be tough to justify the cost.
Not only is the adapter $59, but, again, it only works with a Logitech Harmony universal remote.
The Harmony One that I tested runs $249, and other Logitech devices run from $99 up to $499.
If you've already got a Harmony universal remote, the adapter is pretty much a no-brainer.
Otherwise, you need to decide whether you'd rather eliminate the clutter of an extra remote or use that cash to just buy 10 movies and a pizza and stick with your current setup. Price: $59
Pros: Works flawlessly in translating the IR signal from a Harmony remote into the Bluetooth signal the PS3 understands.
Cons: It's one more wall wart that needs to be plugged in, it's a bit expensive, and it only works with Logitech's line of universal remotes.
Bottom line: If you don't mind the expense, this is a must-buy for any serious home theater enthusiast, and better than any other solution on the market.
