Americans wary of government in auto industry, survey finds

Here's something for the Obama-ites to ponder: Americans remain deeply skeptical about the government's involvement in the auto industry.

Roughly 81 percent of people in a recent survey said that the faster the government gets out of the car business, the better, according to AutoPacific, a California research and consulting company.

Personally, I'm glad that the government extended a hand to General Motors and Chrysler. But it's time for them to go home.

The survey found that:

About 54 percent of those surveyed disagreed with the notion that government involvement in the industry will result in cleaner cars and trucks.

Roughly 66 percent disagreed that government influence will result in GM and Chrysler vehicles that Americans want to buy.

"Clearly, Americans aren't thrilled with government involvement in the U.S. auto companies," said George Peterson, president of Tustin-based AutoPacific.
