Wylie considers new school start times 2:09 PM CT
02:11 PM CDT on Monday, May 19, 2008
The Wylie school board will consider changing school start times for next school year and discuss boundary changes for Wylie High and Wylie East High Schools during its regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
On its first reading of the proposed change, the board will have a choice from two bell schedule options, both of which provide 45 minutes between the starting and ending bells at elementary, junior high/intermediate and high schools.
The proposed adjustment will potentially save the district an estimated $800,000 in operational costs and a one-time savings of more than $2 million, according to Superintendent H. John Fuller. He said the savings will come from being able to better balance student loads and fill buses closer to capacity.
Option One sets elementary hours from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; junior high and intermediate schools from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.; and high schools from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Option Two sets elementary hours from 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.; junior high and intermediate schools from 8:30 to 3:30 p.m.; and high schools to 9:15 to 4:30 p.m.
According to district spokesperson Susan Dacus, the first option has received positive feedback from some working parents because of the earlier start times. Some parents, however, have said they don’t want elementary school students starting school so early.
The school board will also discuss boundary changes for Wylie High and Wylie East High schools. The proposed changes would make the attendance zone for Wylie East High encompass Akin, Birmingham, Cox and Hartman elementary schools as well as the portion of Smith Elementary east of Parker Road and east of Aztec Trail. The Wylie High attendance zone would be designated as Dodd, Groves, Tibbals and Whitt elementary schools and the portion of Smith Elementary west of Parker Road and west of Aztec Trail.
This is a change from an earlier proposal of the boundaries, which divided Smith Elementary north and south along an extension of Park Boulevard to Lake Lavon.
