Man shot outside Garland business; victim possibly suicidal
06:09 PM CST on Wednesday, January 7, 2009
An armed man who police believe was suicidal was fatally shot this afternoon in a confrontation with officers outside a Garland business.
Police were told about 2 p.m. that a suicidal man was on his way to General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems in the 1200 block of North Glenbrook Drive.
When police confronted the man in the business’s parking lot, shots were fired. At least one round was fired by police, but it’s unclear whether the bullet struck anything.
Police would not say whether the man, who had not been identified, fired at police or if he shot himself.
An hour after the shooting, the man’s body lay next to a pickup in the parking lot of General Dynamics, which contracts with the U.S. military.
Christy Curtis, who lives across the street from the plant, which contracts with the U.S. military, said she heard four loud pops about 2 p.m.
"I heard it four times with no pauses in between," Curtis said. "Less than a minute later, I heard the sirens."
