Last-minute filers help fill ballots in Dallas-area council races
07:41 AM CST on Tuesday, March 9, 2010
Monday was the last day to file for area city and town council races, and a number of candidates squeezed in just under the deadline for the May 8 election.
Last-minute filers included candidates running for elections in Irving, Flower Mound, Frisco, Sachse and other cities.
Irving will have its first City Council election under a new mixed system of single-member and at-large seats. Two men filed late Monday for the single-member District 1 seat that is the result of a voting rights lawsuit the city lost last year. Estimates show the majority of the district’s voters are Hispanic.
Mike Gallaway, a 45-year-old inventory planner, will face off against Trini Gonzalez, a 64-year-old business owner, for the empty seat.
Incumbent Sam Smith, 72, faces two challengers for the single-member District 7 seat. They are 45-year-old Kim Limberg, who last week lost the Democratic nomination for the State House 105 seat, and 51-year-old regulatory manager Gerald Farris.
Council member Tom Spink, 71, Roy Santoscoy, 44, a businessman, and Mildred L. Batts, 44, who’s self-employed, will vie for the vacant at-large District 2 seat.
Irving voters will also weigh in on four charter amendments.
Here’s a look at other area races:
There will be two contested City Council races, with incumbent Robin Sedlacek facing Ron Alexander for Place 4, and incumbent Jeff McGregor opposed by Kevin Livesey for Place 6.
Nine candidates are seeking three open positions on the City Council. Those include incumbents Julie Greer in Place 2, Charlene Rushing in Place 4 and Carrie Marshall in Place 6. Challengers include Wanda Adams, Matthew Patrick and Donna Taulbee in Place 2; Kerinda Jackson-Sanders and Linda Pineda in Place 4; and Ed Grant in Place 6.
City Council incumbents Tim Scott and David Koch face challengers for their at-large seats. Corporate controller Matt Wenthold is running for Scott’s Place 1 seat. Real estate investor Brenda Brodrick and engineer Kathleen Holmes are running for Koch’s Place 4 seat.
Mayor Jody Smith faces a challenger, Melissa Northern. Place 2 incumbent Al Filidoro has drawn three opponents: Bob Kohankie, Gerald Robinson and Janet Balekian. Two candidates are running for the Place 4 seat being vacated by Deputy Mayor Jean Levenick: Steve Lyda, who lost his bid last year for the Place 1 seat, and Bryan Webb.
Residents will also be voting on a proposal to sell the 15.8-acre Chinn Chapel Soccer Complex and buy a 23.4-acre tract in a land swap for a larger soccer facility.
Matthew Herrera and Tony Walsh will be running against incumbent Jeff Cheney for the Place 2 seat. The Place 4 seat is a four-way race among Ethan Powell, John Keating, former council member Jim Joyner and incumbent David Prince.
Voters will also decide on 14 charter amendments, including one that would increase the term limits for City Council members and the mayor from two to three terms.
There is one contested council race. Incumbents Doug Athas, Laura Cox and Larry Jeffus will retain their seats. David McNeely filed to challenge incumbent John Willis for the Place 5 seat.
Mayor Charles England, who has been in office for 18 years, is unopposed for another three-year term. Jim Swafford in District 2 and Richard Fregoe in District 4 also are unopposed.
Incumbent John Gorena in Place 4 will face another challenge from Thomas “TJ” Gilmore. Gilmore narrowly lost to Gorena last year in the June runoff election for an unexpired term. Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Rudy Durham’s in Place 5 is unopposed.
There is one contested council race. Three candidates — Robert Drennan, Brian Hutcheson and Gary Ward — filed for the vacant at-large Place 5 seat. Stan Pickett and Shirley Roberts are unopposed.
Residents will vote on four bond propositions totaling $66 million. Major projects include rebuilding miles of streets and alleys, a new recreation center and pool at Heights Park, a fire station and a fire department training center. No city council seats are up for election.
Bill Bricker will try to unseat incumbent Mark Russo for Place 2. Place 6 council member Margo Nielsen faces a challenge from David White. In Place 4, Cliff Sevier is unopposed.
Mayor John Harper will face Place 2 council member Cindy Rushing.
Three candidates want to fill the Place 2 seat: Donna Davis, Jerry Berggren and Robert Kittrell. Nicholas Kreekon, Michael Gallops, Ron Miller and Randy Mays are vying for the Place 6 seat being vacated by Steve Maggiotto, who cannot run again because of term limits. In Place 4, Todd Gottel is unopposed.
Sachse Mayor Mike Felix is unopposed in his bid for a third term.
Incumbent Mark Timm is unopposed in Place 6, but incumbent Patsy McMillan faces Pat Covington in Place 5.
Lawyer Richard Davis is running unopposed for mayor.
But this year will mark the first contested council race in University Park since 2002. Seven candidates are running for four available at-large City Council seats — incumbent and real estate broker, Jerry L. Grable; lawyer Steve Metzger; developer and general contractor, Thomas H. Stewart; lawyer Robert Begert; incumbent and architect Robert Clark; investor Steve Cooke; and physician Alan Wasserman.
There are no City Council elections this year in Carrollton, McKinney or Plano.
Plano is having a runoff election on March 27 for the unexpired Place 3 term between Cathy Fang and André Davidson.
Staff writers Richard Abshire, Brandon Formby, Sam Hodges, Eunaka Kirby, Ray Leszcynski, Ian McCann, Jon Nielsen, Dianne Solís and Valerie Wigglesworth contributed to this report.
