Wrong-way crash in Kaufman County leaves 2 dead, 5 hurt

10:41 PM CDT on Monday, April 6, 2009

By SHELLEY SMITH / The Dallas Morning News

A driver heading the wrong way on U.S. Highway 175 in Kaufman County over the weekend crashed into a vehicle carrying a family of six, killing herself and the other driver, authorities said.

Kemp, Texas

Kemp police said a woman in a sport utility vehicle was heading west on the eastbound lanes of U.S. 175 near the city limits about 11 p.m. Sunday when her vehicle collided with a car carrying the family.

Both of the vehicles were "massively mangled," said Kemp police chief Richard Clemmo.

Kaufman and Mabank authorities arrived as the woman’s 2001 Kia SUV burst into flames. Crews removed her from her vehicle and took her to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead, police said. Authorities did not release her identity.

The driver of a 2001 Lincoln Town Car, identified by Kemp police as Vernon Hamilton of Tyler, was pronounced dead at the scene. Chief Clemmo said Mr. Hamilton was 41 years old. He did not know his relationship to the others in the Town Car.

Three children in his vehicle were taken to a nearby children’s hospital. An adult and a teenager were transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. Authorities did not release their names or conditions.

All six family members were wearing seatbelts, police said.

Kemp is about 50 miles southeast of Dallas.
