FRISCO — A large fire fueled by a stack of hay bales has closed a one mile strip of FM3537, East Main Street, between Independence and Custer roads in Frisco.

The fire covers a two-acre site that is used to store hay bales.

It appears that the fire was started by a discarded cigarette, according to Don Fernandez, assistant chief and fire marshal for the city of Frisco.

A motorist called the fire department at 3:47 a.m. Sunday to report the fire.

No homes are threatened at this time.

Dana Baird, a city of Frisco spokeswoman, said the fire was under control, but there was no indication when it might be extinguished.

The roadway section will likely remain closed the rest of the day because heavy smoke continues to cover the road which is affecting visibility. Drivers should find alternate routes.
