Dallas police open fire on man during pursuit
06:22 AM CDT on Monday, May 12, 2008
Two Dallas police officers opened fire and struck a 24-year-old man Sunday during a pursuit that started in Old East Dallas and ended in University Park.
Michael Reilly was treated for a single wound to the backside and then taken to the Dallas County Jail. He faces a charge of resisting arrest.
Authorities said the chase began after Mr. Reilly called police and said he wanted to harm himself with a gun. When officers went to check on him, he drove away.
Police said they followed him to Woodall Rodgers Freeway, where the man got out of his car and allegedly put his right hand behind his back as if he was reaching for a gun. That's when officers fired a total of six shots.
Mr. Reilly got back in his car and led police to Hyer Street and Armstrong Parkway in University Park. He ran from the car before being captured, police said.
The two officers have been placed on administrative leave as the investigation into the incident continues.
