German textbook with nude images comes under scrutiny in Allen
10:32 AM CDT on Tuesday, May 13, 2008
A German textbook with images of naked women is creating a stir at an Allen High School, and the state is considering pulling the study guide.
Student Joshua Sabik said classmates discovered revealing adult magazine images that can be seen in a photo of a newsstand in their textbook, Deutsch Aktuell. The magazine images are large enough for the reader to see the titles.
"We were actually doing a class reading and a few students noticed it and started giggling, and the teacher caught on and the whole class knew," Joshua said. "It was the talk of the class for about a week."
"Oh, it was obvious," said Joshua's mom Desiree Sabik. "... Naked women, breasts, right out there in your face."
The book is in schools across the country. More than 3,000 of the books are used in advanced German classes across Texas, including many North Texas school districts.
Minnesota-based EMC Paradigm Publishing said it was looking into the issue and declined to comment further.
Students have been using the book since 2005; and Texas spent more than a year fact-checking the text. Education leaders said they didn't know how the photo issue was not raised earlier.
The state said it may remove the books from classes or cover the photos with a sticker.
"It's inappropriate for a high school level class," said Tim Carroll, with the Allen Independent School District. "It would be unlikely we would use that same textbook."
The Plano Independent School District said it intends to remove the page.
"It's shocking," Mrs. Sabik said. "And you think they're really careful about what they put in that textbook ... You just don't suspect that's going to be in there."
