Man fatally shot at traffic light on Elam Road in southeast Dallas

11:47 AM CDT on Thursday, May 14, 2009

By JOE SIMNACHER / The Dallas Morning News

A 25-year-old Dallas driver was fatally shot this morning as he stopped at a traffic light in southeast Dallas near Balch Springs.

Intersection of Elam Road and Masters Drive in Dallas

Fredrick Ray Henderson was pronounced dead at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, the Dallas County Medical examiner's office said. A cause of death had not yet been released by the medical examiner's office, but police said he died from blunt-force injuries and gunshot wounds.

Officers responded to the 9900 block of Elam Road before 1 a.m. to investigate a rollover accident. Paramedics found Henderson — who had been ejected from his gray four-door car — in a nearby field.

Police said Henderson, who was heading south on South Masters Drive, stopped at a traffic light at Elam Road, when another driver pulled up behind Henderson, walked up to his car and fired multiple times at him.

Henderson fled, driving east on Elam Road before crashing into a light pole. He was ejected as his car flipped while crossing a median. The car came to rest right-side up in a field.

The motive for the attack is unknown, said Dallas Police Senior. Cpl. Kevin Janse. Police were searching for the shooter and did not release a detailed description.
