Planes collide at private airport in Roanoke
06:40 PM CDT on Thursday, May 15, 2008
ROANOKE — One single-engine airplane ended up on top of another in a collision Thursday afternoon at Northwest Regional Airport, about 20 miles northeast of Fort Worth.
The Denton County sheriff’s office says nobody was hurt in the accident as one plane apparently tried to land as the other was taking off from the airport near Texas Motor Speedway.
Northwest Regional Airport, on its Web site, bills itself as the largest privately owned airport in America, with more than 550 planes.
A man who answered the phone at Marcair Aviation, a flight school at the airport, declined to give his name to The Associated Press, but said he saw the two aircraft just after the mid-afternoon accident.
The man said, based on the way the planes came to rest, he believes one was landing and the other was taking off.
There is no control tower. Pilots using the airport are required to transmit their locations over a certain radio frequency.
The tail numbers on the planes indicated one is a Piper Cherokee and the other is a Stinson.
The weather in the area Thursday was partly cloudy with light winds.
Airport officials did not immediately respond to calls for comment.Check Screen Name Availability
