Pleasant Grove girl shot in head is released from hospital

05:23 PM CDT on Thursday, May 28, 2009

A 5-year-old Pleasant Grove girl who was shot in the back of the head last weekend as she slept with her mom and siblings was released from the hospital today.

Kayla Mitchell was extremely fortunate that the bullet didn't cause serious permanent damage, said Sherry Peace, a cousin of the victim.

"The only thing she may have is some slight vision issues," Peace said. "I don't believe it's anything that can't be corrected. We're looking forward to a full recovery."

Peace said she does not believe that Kayla is aware of what happened.

Police have not identified any suspects or a motive for the 4:30 a.m. Saturday shooting, which left several bullet holes in the front of the house in the 10400 block of Blackjack Oaks Drive, which is near Mesquite and Balch Springs.

Peace said the family had only moved into the home about a month ago, and they believe that the shooter may have been targeting the home's previous occupants. She also said that Kayla, her mother and siblings would not be returning to the home and would be staying with relatives for now.

"We are in the process of relocating them," she said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Dallas police homicide unit at 214-671-3661 or e-mail homicide@dpd.dallascityhall.com
