Lightning damages 2 homes, sparks fire in another in Denton County
01:33 AM CDT on Sunday, June 29, 2008
Storms that rolled over Denton County late Saturday unleashed lightning that damaged two homes and sparked a fire that destroyed another in the western portion of the county.
"It came in about 6 o'clock, I'd say, and everything kind of turned upside down after that," said Chief Charlie Williams of the Ponder Fire Department. In addition to lightning strikes, he said, the area saw "quite a bit of wind damage and we had one propane tank blown over."
The home that burned, near Justin, was not occupied at the time of the lighting strike, the fire chief said, and no one was injured.
"With all the rain, we're having a hard time getting back here to it with all the equipment that we need," he said about 9:45 p.m., as firefighters hauled water to the remote, 5,000-square-foot home. "The house is going to be a total loss."
