Officials investigate report of ammonia leak at Best Brands in Dallas

Best Brands employees are back at work this morning after an ammonia leak led to the evacuation of 70 workers from its Far North Dallas complex Wednesday night.

10700 block of Miller Road in Dallas

Sensors alerted workers to a leak in the building in the 10700 block of Miller Road just north of Interstate 635 and west of Garland about 9 p.m., according to Dallas Fire-Rescue.

Best Brands uses a type of ammonia to cool and freeze baked goods so products can be shipped locally and nationally, the fire department said. Ammonia can lead to serious and fatal respiratory injuries.

Because of the potential danger, employees were evacuated, and officials restricted traffic on Miller and Plano roads.

Ammonia runs through pipes in the building, and a fire official said it was unclear where the leak began. Sensors indicated that the leak stopped around midnight. Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Ernest Gurulé said the leak may have frozen shut.

No employees or rescue workers were injured.

Best Brands contacted a company that specializes in repairing leaks, the fire department said.

A woman who answered the phone at Best Brands said employees were back at work this morning. Best Brands could not be reached for additional comments.
