Hard Rock Cafe stages Dallas encore at Victory Park

Although Rafy Lozada was busy training new bartenders for the Hard Rock Cafe Dallas' opening at Victory Park next week, he had time to spout off some music trivia.

"Who are the three rock-and-roll artists that all died in a row within ten months of each other?" he asked. "Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix."

A Puerto Rican native, Lozada trains bartenders for Hard Rock openings worldwide. He says this is his 11th opening, but the first in the United States, for the chain that has more than 150 locations in 52 countries.

"Being able to work at a Hard Rock Cafe is so much fun," he said. "We are very different from any other restaurant ... you put passion into it."

After a two-year absence from Dallas, the Hard Rock Cafe is opening at a new location on July 15 with new memorabilia and technology that will make it one of a kind, company officials said.

The previous Hard Rock, which opened in 1986 at the old McKinney Avenue Baptist Church, closed its doors in 2007 after disappointing sales.

The new Hard Rock will be located at Victory, a location that in recent months has worked to attract more business with less pricey retailers and restaurants after three anchor tenants folded.

"Victory is one of the more substantial and impressive private real estate developments in the U.S.," Stacey O'Bryan, a vice president of operations for Hard Rock International, said in an e-mail back in March when the restaurant announced it would return to Dallas.

"We believe the quality of the project, combined with terrific visibility for Hard Rock Cafe Dallas, is a winning combination," O'Bryan had said.

The 8,900-square-foot cafe, located at 2211 North Houston Street, will feature a 265-seat restaurant and an outdoor patio for 40.

It will be the first Hard Rock to feature interactive touch screens that will allow customers to explore 71,000 pieces of memorabilia in the company's collection and place requests for music to be played while they are dining, says Todd Stoerkel, general manager of Dallas.

The building design is also sleeker and "greener" than the average Hard Rock with energy efficient heating and cooling systems and environmentally friendly building materials, Stoerkel said. Cafes in Seattle and Honolulu will follow Dallas's green trend.

"It is in keeping with our 'Save the Planet' slogan," Stoerkel said.

But, of course, the main draw to any Hard Rock is the memorabilia. The company's collection contains guitars, shirts, hats, records, letters and other items that capture music history. Pieces on display are swapped out every seven years to give visitors a fresh experience at their local Hard Rock.

Memorabilia designer Andrea Torgeman spent about five months at the company's Orlando headquarters to pick the perfect pieces for the Dallas location.

"I wish I could put more in here. I just ran out of room," she said.

While Torgeman tried to pick pieces that had a Texas connection, some items are included at the Dallas location because of their general interest.

Items featured at the Hard Rock Cafe Dallas

George Harrison letter - This handwritten letter by one of the Beatles to a fan reads, "Dear Christine, Thanks for your letter. I'm sorry to hear that you lost your book at Fenway Park but I hope this may make up for it a little." "It is a rarity now for an artist to actually write you a letter with all the Facebooks and Twitter," said Hard Rock memorabilia designer Andrea Torgeman said. "This is like a dinosaur."

Elvis Presley western wear - A black cowboy hat worn by the King himself in a 1974 concert at the Houston Astrodome as well as a pair of chaps and a black western-style shirt that he wore in the 1967 film, "Double Trouble."

Mick Ralphs shirt - The member of Bad Company was having a few cocktails after a sound check and met a man wearing an "official-looking" security shirt. After a quick swap, Ralphs wore the shirt on-stage that night.

ZZ Top fuzzy guitars - These white, faux-fur covered guitars from the 1984 music video, "Legs," were acquired from Texas natives guitarist and bassist Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill on the condition that they would always be on display at the Hard Rock Cafe Dallas.

Madonna cowgirl suit - The material girl wore the white and pink fringed western suit on the cover of her eighth album, Music.

Roy Orbison suit and yearbook- Along with his iconic black suit, the new Hard Rock features an original drawing from his 1953 high school yearbook from Wink, Texas.
