Police: Carjacking possible motive for NorthPark shooting of woman

Dallas police say a carjacking may have been the motive for the shooting of a Waxahachie woman outside NorthPark Center.

Demond Stuard, 28, of Dallas and Anton Wallace, 22, of Grand Prairie were each being held on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in lieu of $250,000 bond.

The men are accused of shooting 43-year-old Mary Boyd in the face about 9 p.m. May 16 as she sat in her truck, waiting to pick up her daughter from a movie. The gunman walked up to her in the parking lot outside Nordstrom department store.

“Here’s a woman sitting in her truck, waiting for her daughter to come out from a movie, and out of nowhere the subject comes up,” Dallas police Lt. Sally Lannom said at a news conference this morning. “She recognizes danger and he shoots her in the face. That's...that's coldhearted. So obviously we are very pleased to get them off the street.”

Acting on an anonymous tip that provided two names phoned in to Crime Stoppers, police arrested the men at the home of a girlfriend and interrogated the men Monday.

The lieutenant said investigators had hit a “brick wall” before the tip came in.

“We had quite a few leads from the Crime Stoppers line that didn't work, but we always want those leads,” Lt. Lannom said. “Because you never know when it's going to be the right one. And here we are seven weeks later, and we got the right tip. So we always want people to call in.”

Investigators also have fingerprints and other evidence they hope will bolster their case, the lieutenant said.

Mr. Wallace owns a 2003 blue Dodge pickup truck that matches the description of the getaway car in the shooting, according to court records. He was still in possession of the truck at the time of his arrest, Lt. Lannom said.

Police have said they believe the attack was random. The attack was a relatively rare occurrence of violent crime at the largest mall in North Texas.

NorthPark officials did not immediately provide comment. Police said Ms. Boyd was notified of the arrest.

“Her family is obviously very pleased that these suspects are off the street and cannot hurt anyone else,” Lt. Lannom said.
