Among the last words Jonathan Davis heard was his friend's warning that sitting on the trunk of their stalled Lincoln probably wasn’t safe.

Homero Yanez

Moments later, a silver Mercedes crashed into the Lincoln, and the 22-year-old Dallas man was killed.

Mr. Davis and his friend, Dexter Richardson, were driving eastbound on Interstate 30 early this morning when their Lincoln stalled near the Interstate 45 split, said Kim Leach, a Dallas County sheriff's spokeswoman.

The car wasn’t pulled completely out of the right lane as Mr. Davis sat on it. Mr. Richardson said he had suggested to his friend to stand on the side of the road where it was safer, Ms. Leach said.

A Mercedes, driven by Homero Yanez, 27, crashed into the Lincoln and then veered across two lanes, colliding with two more vehicles, Ms. Leach said. No one from the subsequent accidents was injured.

Mr. Richardson remained at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas with non-life threatening injuries. Mr. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene, the Dallas County medical examiner’s office said.

Homero Yanez is being held at the Dallas County Jail on intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault charges. His bail was set at $50,000.
