Two men who investigators said stole an ATM from a Wills Point credit union early Sunday were arrested after leading police on a high speed chase to Kaufman County.

The suspects, whose names were not released, are being held in the Van Zandt County Jail.

Van Zandt Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Crumpler was slightly injured during the pursuit when his cruiser crashed into a creek, said Sheriff Pat Burnett.

An emergency call was placed to the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday that a suspicious person and a car were parked near My Credit Union in Wills Point, officials said.

The credit union’s ATM had been stolen last month, Sheriff Burnett said.

When a sheriff’s deputy arrived, the driver and a passenger took off going westbound Interstate 20. The chase ended in Kaufman County when the gray car left the road way near mile Marker 503.

The two occupants fled on foot and were caught in a pasture. The ATM was recovered from the crashed vehicle, Sheriff Burnett said.

Officers from Wills Point, Kaufman County Sheriff’s office, Terrell police, and a Dallas police helicopter assisted in the pursuit and search. The two men are to be arraigned today in Van Zandt County.
