Rain was a welcome relief Wednesday morning in Dallas as showers moved across the downtown area.

Parts of Tarrant and Dallas counties received rain this morning, and t emperatures dipped into the 80s at midday. Less than half an inch of rain was expected, said Nick Hampshire, a National Weather Service meterologist.

The showers provided "much-needed rainfall," he said. As of Tuesday, the area has received about 1.3 inches of rain for the months of June and July. The normal rainfall for that time period is about 5 inches.

Heat caused the death of an 84-year-old man found outside his home Monday when the temperature reached 105 degrees, the Dallas County medical examiner said. Harold Ulrick's 95-year-old wife was found dead inside the home, though the medical examiner ruled that Alma Ulrick died of natural causes.

A neighbor who came to check on the couple about 9 a.m. Monday found Mr. Ulrick dead on a walkway outside the home in the 4400 block of Greenland Drive, northwest of where Interstates 30 and 635 meet, Mesquite police spokesman Bill Hedgpeth said.

Mr. Ulrick was the third heat-related death reported in Dallas County this year, the medical examiner said.

The heat’s other victims were Ronald Gibson, 49, who died June 6 and Bille Jean Emmons, 82, who died July 23. The medical examiner is still investigating the death of 19-month-old Kamila Brown, who died after being left in a daycare van on July 21.

DMN staff writers Scott Goldstein and Rachel Slade contributed to this report.
