3 human cases of West Nile virus confirmed in Arlington
05:57 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 19, 2008
Tarrant County Public Health confirmed that three human cases of the West Nile virus have recently been reported in Arlington.
The individuals were believed to be infected in areas near Cravens Park in southeast Arlington.
There was only one other human West Nile case in Tarrant County this year. That was in April in Fort Worth.
In the years with the fewest West Nile infections, Tarrant County reported five human cases in 2002 and 2004. In three other years, there were either 22 or 23 cases.
The worst year for the disease in Tarrant County was in 2006 when there were 53 cases and seven deaths.
The virus is typically transmitted by mosquitoes.
Health department officials encourage people to remove standing water from their property, stay indoors immediately before and after dusk and dawn, wear light-colored clothing with long sleeves, and use insect repellent with DEET.
