Texas attorney general affirms statewide standard for GPA calculation
08:42 AM CDT on Thursday, August 28, 2008
AUSTIN – Attorney General Greg Abbott has decided that all high school graduates in Texas will have their grade point averages calculated the same way beginning with the Class of 2009.
Affirming a law passed by the Legislature last year, a legal opinion from the attorney general says the standard method for computing a GPA will be determined by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and be one of the main criteria for admission into state colleges and universities.
The new GPA will be used to determine the top 10 percent of students at each school – a factor in admission to the state's flagship universities.
