Brothers discover parents dead in Fort Worth home

Two men discovered their 70-year-old parents slumped over dead from gunshot wounds Thursday in what Fort Worth police believe was a murder-suicide.

After not hearing from the couple for several days, the brothers visited the father’s house in the 7400 block of Slippery Rock Drive in southwest Fort Worth just before 6:30 p.m. and saw their mother’s car in the driveway, police Lt. Paul Henderson said.

The brothers entered the house through the unlocked front door. In an office toward the front of the residence, their mother lay dead against the wall, shot in the head, Lt. Henderson said. Their father’s body was in a chair with a small-caliber revolver nearby.

The victims were Jerry Chase and Berline Chase, both 70 years old and from Fort Worth, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner. They were divorced, and only the man lived at the house, Lt. Henderson said.

“Right now, we believe the man shot his estranged wife,” he said.

There were no signs of forced entry, and the woman’s purse sat in the front seat of her car, possibly indicating plans for a short visit, Lt. Henderson said. Neighbors reported seeing the vehicle at the home starting Tuesday but heard nothing out of the ordinary.

The shooting probably occurred on or around Tuesday based on those reports and the conditions of the bodies, he said.

There was no indication of what prompted the incident or any sign of a suicide note, Lt. Henderson said.
