Night-time bicyclist dies after police car hits him

09:52 PM CDT on Sunday, September 9, 2007

A man on a bicycle was fatally injured when he was struck from behind late Saturday by an Arlington police officer.

Ut Ly, 42, died from head injuries about 4:20 a.m. at a Fort Worth hospital.

Both Mr. Ly and Officer Patrick Yeats were westbound when the accident happened about 11:15 p.m. Saturday in the 500 block of Cravens Park Drive.

Police say that Officer Yeats, an eight-year department veteran, was unable to see Mr. Ly before hitting him.

Mr. Ly was not wearing reflective gear, and his bike lacked a reflector or light visible from the rear, police said. The accident remains under investigation.
