School to resume Tuesday at Fairview's Sloan Creek Middle School

A Collin County middle school will be back in business Tuesday, after a one-day break due to heavy absenteeism from students and teachers with flu-like symptoms.

"We do plan on opening," said Cindy Booker, spokesperson for Lovejoy Independent School District, which includes Sloan Creek Middle School.

The Fairview school got a "deep cleaning" Friday afternoon and evening, with every surface sanitized, Booker said.

Nearly a third of Sloan Creek Middle students missed school Friday. That led Lovejoy ISD officials to announce they would close the school today in hopes of stopping the spread of illness and giving those already ill a chance to recover without missing class.

As of last week, the district had not received any reports of students confirmed as having H1N1, commonly known as swine flu. But Sloan Creek Middle officials heard from parents that many of the absent students were experiencing fever, coughing, aches, and other flu-like symptoms.

Absenteeism was high among teachers as well.

Booker said Lovejoy ISD would be closely monitoring attendance at its other campuses.
