Dallas United Way launches annual fundraiser with a lower goal

The United Way of Metropolitan Dallas launched its annual fundraising campaign Tuesday with a goal of raising $54 million for local charities despite tough economic times.
The agency, which raised $58.4 million in pledges last year, lowered its goal this time around because of the economy.
“Despite the economic conditions, we think we can be very successful with your help,” Gary Godsey, president and chief executive officer of the local United Way told supporters at a campaign kickoff event Tuesday.
Charities that receive the funds have seen a 20- to 40 percent increase in demand for help, according to the United Way.
