2 people injured in fire at Dallas apartment complex

12:49 PM CST on Wednesday, November 4, 2009

By KRISTY CHU / The Dallas Morning News

An early-morning explosion at a Dallas apartment complex today injured two people and destroyed a building containing the laundry room and offices. The explosion probably began with a gas leak in the laundry room, Dallas fire officials said.

2600 block of East Illinois Avenue

A one-alarm fire began shortly after 3 a.m. at the King Square Apartments in the 2600 block of East Illinois Avenue. Firefighters were able put out the fire quickly, Dallas Fire-Rescue officials said.

Two men with burn injuries were found 8 blocks away in the 3400 block of East Illinois Avenue. The victims were transferred to Parkland hospital. It was not immediately known why they were 8 blocks away. Fire officials were not able to give a more detailed description of the victims or their conditions.

Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a call in which the caller said that the laundry room had "blown up." Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire climbing through the roof, a wall blown out and scattered debris, fire officials said.

Atmos Energy officials worked with investigators to determine a cause for the explosion. Atmos officials initially did not find any gas leaks. However, fire officials said investigators found a leak and are continuing to investigate the incident as an accident.
