Afternoon forecast includes freezing mist, snow
06:32 AM CST on Wednesday, December 17, 2008
Dallas-area road conditions are improving a bit this afternoon, but commutes are still slow as ice remains on highway overpasses, causing slick conditions and accidents.
Temperatures remained below freezing this morning, and a light mist and snow fell in some areas.
Here’s the latest:
Weather: Dallas-Fort Worth will continue to see freezing mist, and some parts may see snow as the day goes on. The precipitation is hit-and-miss, said WFAA-TV meteorologist Steve McCauley.
Temperatures remained below freezing into late morning. Temperatures at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport had reaching only 27 degrees.
The messy precipitation should shift east early this evening, but it remains a “slow process,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Eric Martello. The winter weather advisory was expected to last until 4 p.m.
By this evening’s commute, temperatures should be just barely above freezing and most of the ice should have melted, Mr. McCauley said.
A warm front is expected to cause dense fog that may freeze Wednesday morning, Mr. Martello said. Once the fog clears, temperatures should warm to the mid-40s and maybe low 50s as the front moves through.
The warm-up will continue through the week; temperatures are expected to climb to near 70 degrees by Friday. Another cold front will take temperatures down to 60 Saturday, according to forecasts.
Traffic: The Dallas County sheriff’s office reports some improvements on the roadways, but icy spots remain.
Traffic Pulse reports that there have been fewer accidents in the past hour and that travel speeds along Interstate 635 have picked up.
But delays and sluggish traffic remained for parts of the area, including Duncanville and Balch Springs as well as on the Lake Lewisville bridge.
The bridges at Interstate 20 and State Highway 360, closed this morning because of ice, were sanded and reopened by the afternoon, Arlington police said.
TxDOT has 45 vehicles treating bridges and roadways in Tarrant County, said TxDOT spokesman Val Lopez. The crews will continue as long as the temperature stays below freezing and icy conditions persist.
"We're going to have a long day," Mr. Lopez said. "We didn't get hit as badly as the folk in Dallas."
Dallas Area Rapid Transit has closed high-occupancy vehicle lanes on the following roadways tonight because of ice:
•Westbound Tom Landry Highway (Interstate 30)
•Eastbound R.L. Thornton Freeway (I-30)
•Southbound R.L. Thornton/Marvin D. Love freeways (I-35E/U.S. Highway 67)
•Northbound Central Expressway at LBJ Freeway (I-635)
•The ramp from southbound Stemmons Freeway (I-35E) to LBJ Freeway
Crashes: TxDOT spokesman Mark Pettit said there were accidents everywhere. When crews would finish clearing one accident, "Boom! Another one happens somewhere else," he said. Dallas police said they responded to nearly 100 accidents between midnight and 5:30 a.m.
Dallas County sheriff's office said they have responded to more than 160 accidents and motorist assists since late Monday.
A Dallas County sheriff's office deputy was responding to a minor accident when her squad car slid on ice and crashed on State Highway 67 this morning. She was treated for a bump on her forehead.
Fatalities: Authorities were attributing at least two fatalities to icy road conditions and investigating a third.
Early this morning, a Cleburne man died after the Ford pickup he was riding in rolled over in the 5400 block of northbound Interstate 35W in Alvarado. Domingo Juarez, 46, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead. The driver and another passenger were taken to the hospital.
A 46-year-old Fort Worth man died late Monday in Irving after he lost control of his 2008 Toyota pickup and crashed into a utility pole. Mark Sargent was heading north in the 5900 block of Riverside Drive, Irving police said. Two passengers were injured.
In Haltom City, police said a Fort Worth man died when his SUV rolled over early this morning in the 5900 block of State Highway 121. The Tarrant County medical examiner's office identified the man as Juan Tapia, 20. Police said ice was a possible factor and were also investigating whether speed and alcohol may have contributed to the accident.
Schools: Several districts announced closures or delayed openings. McKinney and Frisco school districts were closed. Both Dallas and Fort Worth school districts opened at their regular times. Check school delays and closings
Hospitals: Parkland Memorial Hospital says there has been an increase in trauma cases because of weather-related incidents, including car crashes.
Airports: Tim Smith of American Airlines said there have been delays throughout the day at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Outbound flights are running a half hour to an hour late due to de-icing prior to take-off. Inbound flights are arriving normally.
There has been a handful of cancellations, but because of weather in the Northeast, he said.
Utilities: Oncor reported about 260 power outages through Tarrant and Dallas counties, and said ice was not causing any major problems.
Too icy: Early morning conditions were too slick even for road crews. Shortly after 4 a.m., a Dallas sand truck slid on ice and flipped on Coit Road north of Interstate 635. The truck was headed to treat an icy location at the time of the accident. The driver wasn’t injured.
Staff writers Dan X. McGraw, Debra Dennis, Jason Sickles, Emily Tsao and Marissa Alanis contributed to this report.
