Dallas state Rep. Roberto Alonzo loses brother, nephew in South Texas drownings

11:42 AM CST on Monday, December 22, 2008

Associated Press

DALLAS – A 4-year-old boy and his grandfather drowned during a South Texas fishing trip when the child fell into the water and the man jumped in to try to save him.

Both victims were related to state Rep. Roberto Alonzo of Dallas, who announced the deaths and identified the pair.

Funeral arrangements were pending Monday for 58-year-old Ramon Alonzo and his grandson, Elisha T. Alonzo.

Rep. Alonzo said the accident happened Saturday afternoon during a fishing trip to the Crystal City area. The victims were his older brother and his grand nephew.

Police early Monday referred inquiries to the Dimmit County sheriff's department, which did not immediately return a call to The Associated Press.

Autopsies have been ordered.
